Hair
How to do a ballet bun.
- Pull the hair back into a neat pony-tail making sure the elastic is quite tight.
- Twist the hair and coil around the elastic to form a ‘bun’ shape.
- Put the net over the hair and shape the bun so it is neat, round and quite flat against the head.
- Place several U-shaped hair pins around the bun to secure it (ensuring that the pins lie flat against the head).
Ballet Shoes
The ballet shoe is the dancer's best tool, providing support and comfort. The following guidelines will help you achieve the optimum fit.
- Make sure your are wearing the tights you use for dance while trying the shoes on.
- Stand flat in the ballet shoe and make sure that your toes do not curl. If they do, you should choose a larger size.
- If there is too much room at the front of the shoe, it is difficult for the dancer to articulate the foot to pointe. If you need to curl your toes in an effort to keep the ballet shoe on, you should choose a smaller size.
- If one shoe fits better than the other and there is not left or right shoe, try switching the shoes.
Once you have selected the correct ballet shoes for your daughter you will need to sew in the elastic. The following should enable you to correctly sew the elastic to the shoes.
- The elastic should be positioned high in the instep. This ensures a good fit at the heel.
- Fold down the heel of the ballet shoe until it is flat against the sock lining.
- Place a pencil mark where the fold creases closest to the binding
- Stitch only one side of the elastic onto the binding right below the drawstring. Be careful not to sew the elastic over the drawstring.
- Put the ballet shoe on and gently pull the elastic strap over the instep where it is the most comfortable.
- Place a pencil mark where the elastic meets the binding.
- Stitch the elastic below the drawstring being careful not to sew the elastic over it.
- Repeat these steps for the other shoe.
